How are the ratings calculated?
The ratings are based on the four major annual quizzes run or facilitated by QA:
-
Australian Quiz Championships (weighted 100%)
-
Australian State Championships (weighted 80%)
-
World Quiz Championships - IQA (weighted 90%)
-
World Quiz Championships - OQL (weighted 90%)
A player's best three weighted scores (only) from the four most recent quizzes are included. They are scaled to a score out of 100, weighted, and then averaged. Ratings are updated four times per year, i.e. after every major quiz.
As an example, a player who scored 66 in the State Championship which had an Australia-wide top score of 84 would receive a weighted score of 66/84 *100 *80% = 62.9 for that event. If this was among their top three scores, this value would then be averaged with the player’s other two best scores to produce their player rating number. These numbers are then ranked to provide the rankings.
Note that a revised system is being phased in during 2026, with some older scores retained to help provide a rating for those who have not sat sufficient quizzes in the current cycle. From September 2026, a player who has only sat one or two quizzes in the previous 12 months will be treated as though they received a score of zero for the quizzes they missed. Quizzers whose ranking is calculated in this way will be indicated with an asterisk in the ranked list.
Can I get my ranking?
Yes, provided you have played at least two of the four major quizzes above in the previous two years.
Ratings and rankings for those outside the top 40 are available on request (email us). There are currently 134 Australian quizzers with an active ranking.
